"Space isn't remote at all. It's only an hour's drive away if your car could go straight upwards."

-Fred Hoyle, British astronomer, 1915-2001

Outer Space is a place beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. By general accord, Outer Space begins around 100 km (62 miles) straight up from the Earth’s surface. As such, if one is driving at 100 km/hr (62 mph), you’d reach outer space in roughly an hour, which is what Hoyle is describing. Hoyle was quoted saying this in a Sayings of the Week column from The Observer in 1979.
